Artist Of The Month - March 2008
Phyllis Howard is a local, award winning artist working in graphite, acrylic, and color pencil generally in a realistic style. Her work is shown locally, in the Vancouver , Washington area, and in North Texas . Much of her work is large scale since she is a muralist specializing in commissioned pieces.
In her “Wild Things Collection” the eyes of these large creatures are the compelling factor. Each has a personality and the expression sensed in the stance of their bodies or their stares. In most of them gentleness and restraint are evident, even when wary or in warning.
An original takes from 10 – 40 hours to create with care given to minute details, the cast of shadows, the dip of an ear and frequently the glint reflected from the eyes. It’s her desire that you also feel admiration and respect for these magnificent creatures as you view them from her perspective.

Sherry Shipley
Artist Of The Month - January 2008
I grew up in the shadow of the Cascades, the beauty of the Pacific Northwest inspired a love of nature and wildlife. Trips to the mountains supply a stunning and endless backdrop for my wildlife subjects which I have been painting for over 40 years. I also love doing the domestic pets and have done portraits of dogs, cats and horses for many years.
While raising a family I attended the Art Institute of Seattle where I graduated with honors with a degree in Visual Communications. I went on to produce art for magazines, newspapers and television, but my background in the fine arts and my desire to paint wildlife called me back to doing what I have always loved. You can find more of Sherry's work at Sherry's web site

Richard King
Web Lottery - November 2007
After 4 years in the new Air Force as a sargent, I went to College on the GI Bill and became a teacher, Counselor, Vice Principal and Principal. I then thought of what would I do if I retired? So I took a painting class in the evenings at Fort Clayton, Panama and became an ARTIST.
I do try to do Lighthouses that I have seen and others I haven't but do some research on them. I visit them when I can. Also flowers, landscapes, and things of nature. I always take pictures of the things I paint and sometimes I like the photos the best thus the photos part.

Mary Maue
Artist Of The Month - October 2007
My life has been infused with the love of art and nature since my childhood with an artist mother and six aspiring artist siblings. My art career began with my first commissioned portrait at the age of 13.
I enjoy the diversity and variety of different media. While pastel is my medium of choice, I often return to my first love of painting in oils.
The majestic scenery of western Washington provides the inspiration for my artwork. My leisure
time is spent painting plein air or searching for new material--sketchbook and camera in hand.

Anita Johnston
Artist Of The Month - June 2007
Drawing and painting has been a life-long interest for me and through the years I have worked in many media. Currently my favorite media is acrylic, preferably liquid acrylic because it will work like watercolor or like oil and also do things that neither of the others will do. I love to experiment, work in a free style, and let the paint lead the process. It is a technique I learned years ago working with India ink. It is fun! And I believe one should do things she enjoys. My work may be representational or abstract, but to me it always seems connected to land or sea forms: I am by nature a child of the Earth, but I just happen to have a brush in my hand.

Mary Edwards
Artist Of The Month - February 2007
Whenever I visit a new area, I find myself thinking of how subjects can be interpreted in paint. It doesn't matter what the subject is. The play of light and shadow, the contrasts of color, the shapes and movement in what I am seeing spark a desire to interpret the images on paper or canvas. The beauty of nature defies duplication, but my constant hope is to convey the sense of its wonder. Sometimes oil paints serve the purpose, and at other times watercolors give the effect I'm trying to achieve. Sometimes, it simply doesn't work and then I start again. Every painting session is a new beginning.
